Pre-Conference Field Trip 6
Saturday September 29, 2012
General Background
The Gulf Coast Tour will begin in New Orleans, one of the country’s oldest, most interesting and culturally diverse cities. This one-day excursion will examine the Gulf Coast’s major ecosystems and a part of New Orleans damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The river and wetland systems have experienced long-term impacts from restricted freshwater and sediment flow needed for healthy coastal wetlands, estuaries and bays. Nutrient-rich agricultural runoff discharged from the Mississippi River has created one of the world’s largest hypoxia zones. The recent Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill was the largest offshore spill in U.S. history, impacting large areas of open water, coastal wetlands and beaches.
The tour will focus on current research and restoration efforts being conducted by the United States Geological Survey’s National Wetlands Research Center, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the Louisiana State University School for Coast and Environment, the Army Corps of Engineers and other organizations.
